The reality for many organizations is that multi‑modal IT – where organizations will need to support and manage a wide range of IT delivery approaches from IT‑centric mainframe on premise solutions to pay‑as‑you‑goa external cloud services – is a true reflection of how IT is delivered and consumed.

Ovum believes that operating IT in this complex environment requires all the constituencies to be aligned and working to a single strategic objective focused on holistic strategic demand management. The challenge is that the different delivery approaches have different teams, and often very little cross‑team collaboration takes place.

Ovum sees 2016 as the year when agile development will become the dominant development methodology, and a different approach to project and portfolio management (PPM) will be needed to optimize its delivery.
